The 83rd winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 15th September 1858 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Sunbeam, a bay filly by Chanticleer out of Sunflower, owned by Mr James Merry. The favourite Toxophilite helped set the early pace but dropped away tamely to finish fourth behind Sunbeam who won by half a length from The Hadji in 3 minutes 20 seconds, with Blanche of Middlebie a neck back in third.
