The 83rd winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 15th September 1858 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Sunbeam, a bay filly by Chanticleer out of Sunflower, owned by Mr James Merry. A field of 18 runners contested the race, although there were 138 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 3450 sovereigns. (Equivalent to £358,800 in 2017)

The favourite Toxophilite helped set the early pace but dropped away tamely to finish fourth behind Sunbeam who won by half a length from The Hadji in 3 minutes 20 seconds, with Blanche of Middlebie a neck back in third.
